The ends of the board are notched at half-inch intervals and, as the name suggests, the copper wire is wound around the edges of the frame. In both cases, the two ends of the wire are connected to a variable picofarad capacitor that is used to tune the antenna to the correct frequency for the radio station. Take two inch 1-by-6 inch boards and place a mark on both at the mid-point on one edge. Use a square to mark a slot beginning at these marks running to the middle of the flat side of each board.
A 1-byinch piece of finished lumber actually measures three-quarters of an inch by five-and-a-half inches, so the middle of the flat side will actually be two-and-three-quarters inch. Use a small handsaw to cut the marked slots out of each board. Put the boards together by aligning the slots and pushing the outside edges of the boards until they reach the bottom of the slot.
The result should be an X-shaped frame. Use the small handsaw to make eight, half-inch deep slots, one-half an inch apart on all four ends of the frame. Wrap gauge copper wire around the outside of the frame through the slots. The ground stake can be driven into a convenient and safe place nearby. For maximum reception, stretch the antenna wire out perpendicular to the station you want to listen to. That means if you draw a make-believe line toward the station, you want to lay the antenna wire out 90 degrees to that imaginary line.
You can mount the wire at any height, but consider eight feet for safety. Bare the end of the antenna wire I use a knife or diagonal pliers and clip it to the coil. Our antenna did not work on the pipe we used until we sanded the rust away on a small section under the clamp. This is also important to make the ground work.

If you have bone dry soil you may have to dump quite a bit of water on the dirt to make the soil more conductive. Clip the wire to the clamp.
Tune your radio to a very weak station. Move the coil near the radio until you hear the station improve. The coil intensifies the signal which is inductively picked up by the ferrite antenna inside the radio. Please let us know of your successes or failures so fellow listeners can benefit from your experiences. You can experiment with the diameter of the coil, the number of turns and the length of antenna wire you use. This antenna works great on the AM band because of the properties of these frequencies.
Loop antennas can work on other frequencies also but need some modification because of the frequency property differences. There are probably some discoveries to be made in the future with loop antenna research.follow site

As always, we value your opinion and encourage questions. Please feel free to contact us or leave a comment. Thanks for the info. A station about 30 miles from me just cut their power way down. I am going to try your tips to see if I can pick them up again. Thanks for the tips and the quality products you guys furnish. There is so much cheap junk out there anymore, I hone in when I find a good vendor.
I bought this model because it has antenna in-puts.

I plan to put a roof top anntena up, but am not finding a sutable schematic online. Must the insulated wire be single strand and what diameter is recommended? Single strand or multi-strand is fine as long as it is insulated and not shielded. RG or RG are the grades I use.
One day I stumbled upon a great video for this. The video host gives a great step-by-step walk through on creating one.

Especially with this new chip. See you in about two weeks. Thanks for the help so far, MorrisSWL. Contributing Member Offline Posts: MorrisSWL on June 12, , MorrisSWL on June 13, , W4AMV on June 13, , The variable cap implemented in the video used a mailing envelope and tin foil.
Answer your own question. Do you think that making a variable cap out of aluminum foil and using alligator clips to make the electrical contacts will work as a long term solution? Steve - K4HX on June 16, , Do you really think using aluminum foil and alligator clips are a long term solution?
Connecting Component AM Receiver to Loop Antenna
We're here to help but meet us half way. Sorry for the mis understanding. The video and the intention I had in directing you to it was to show some very clever solution to a problem in hand. I don't have a broadcast variable capacitor of pF. This fellow provides a very neat answer and it works. And if you are really motivated, clean up your algebra book, and calculate the resulting C that you get!
Quite alot of FUN.

No, you are probably right, it will not last for more than a year But what the heck, if it works, WOW. In the meantime you can save up the dollars and go buy a real cap while your looking at this one made out of a paper envelope in AWE.

In addition you get to see if the loop works. However, you will have to provide the wire! Steve - K4HX on June 19, , The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is by venturing a little past them into the impossible. So Morris, what you built that worked was an impedance transforming network.

Again, hooking any loop directly across the receiver inputs will degrade its performace as the input on your receiver is 75 ohms as I recall. Keeping a similar configuration as you outlined that worked, try using 75 ohm coax routed from the Rx AM terminals to the tuned loop-coupled loop configuration TL-CL. Keep the TL-CL as mentioned in the prior reply compact and together.
